Governor Guide on The Role of the Chair

This guide focuses on the responsibilities of the chair of the governing body. Much is also relevant to the vice-chair and chairs of committees.

The chair of the governing body is elected annually. He/she plays a key role in ensuring the effectiveness of the governing body. The chair is responsible for leading the governing body but does cannot act on the governing body’s behalf without specific delegated powers or in certain cases of urgency.

This guide provides a detailed account of this important role, whilst at the same time setting it in the context of the overall responsibilities of the governing body.
